National Days of Service
JANUARY
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: This day was designated as an annual federal holiday and national day of service by Congress in 1994. This day is to bring attention to real needs affecting our local communities. The slogan is a “A Day On, Not a Day Off.” Third Monday in January.
FEBRUARY
Random Acts of Kindness Week: RAK Week is dedicated to celebrating the little things we do for others.
MARCH
AmeriCorps Week: March celebrates AmeriCorps week and is a recruitment and recognition event designed to bring more people into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.
APRIL
National Volunteer Week: A nationwide initiative to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community, and to inspire others to find ways to take action that creates change.
Global Youth Service Day: Global Youth Service day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world that activates and celebrates the millions of children and youth who find their voice, take action, and have an impact on vital issues.
MAY
Join Hands Day: This national event unites young people and adults in an effort to make their neighborhoods better. The day brings youth and adults together as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem. First Saturday in May.
Senior Corps Week: Senior Corps Week is an opportunity to highlight the impact of Senior Corps volunteers in Wisconsin, celebrate their service, and invite others to join. Senior Corps connects today's over-55s with the people and organizations that need them most; they volunteer as mentors, coaches, and companions to people in need, and contribute valuable experience and job skills.
SEPTEMBER
9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance:
A national movement launched in 2002 to establish 9/11 as a national day of kindness, service and reflection by volunteering, helping others in need, or doing something good for your community.
OCTOBER
Be the Change Day: An annual service opportunity for South Asian Americans and their allies to engage in collective public service activities that lead to deeper civic engagement and unity, in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s challenge to “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Generally the first Saturday in October.
Make A Difference Day: The nation's most impactful and action-packed day of service that mobilizes over three million volunteers across the country. Locally, Make A Difference Day efforts are orchestrated by local volunteer centers, including The Volunteer Center of Brown County. NOVEMBER
National Family Volunteer Day: A day of service that celebrates the power of families who volunteer together to support their communities. Family Volunteer Day is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving to 'kick off' the holiday season with giving and service.
National Philanthropy Day: Sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as a way to increase public interest and awareness of the importance of philanthropy, as well as knowledge on giving, volunteering and engagement at the charitable level. Generally held on November 15 each year.
